The Heavenly Way and the Human Way, Explained by One Formula:
The Self-Regulating Code of Diminishing Surplus to Supplement Insufficiency

Laozi · Tao Te Ching, Chapter 77 · Applied at Four Levels

"The Way of Heaven diminishes what is in excess and supplements what is insufficient; the way of humans is otherwise — it diminishes the insufficient to serve the surplus." In one sentence, Laozi tells the two fates of a system's self-regulation. The Law of Value Conservation gives the same answer: the Heavenly Way is the automatic correction of Y = E × S × T; the human way is the division that pursues E alone and drifts ever further off. The way out lies in "serving the world from one's surplus."

ANSWER FIRST · ONE SENTENCE

Laozi's "Heavenly Way" is the self-regulating mechanism of the Law of Value Conservation: diminishing the surplus to supplement the insufficient — when S (social value) and T (time value) are over-drawn, the system corrects itself and brings E back to the path of measure. This is the "automatic repair" of the multiplication formula.

The remedy lies in "serving the world from one's surplus": let currency carry economic value, social value, and time value at once — when the three values are measured on one unified yardstick, the surplus give way to supplement the insufficient (the Heavenly Way), and the insufficient gain the chance to create (the human way corrected) — the self-regulating virtuous cycle begins, and nation, enterprise, and individual all win.

00

One Formula to Understand It

THE HEAVENLY WAY · THE MULTIPLICATION OF SELF-REGULATION
Y = E × S × T

E economic value (source of surplus) · S social value (trust and fairness) · T time value (sustainability and generations)

Diminishing the surplus to supplement the insufficient: when the three values fall out of balance, the Heavenly Way corrects on its own and returns to multiplication.

THE HUMAN WAY · THE DIVISION OF THE MATTHEW EFFECT
E = Y / (S × T)

When a system recognizes only the surplus of E, diminishing the insufficiency of S and T: the rich grow richer, the poor poorer —

diminishing the insufficient to serve the surplus: polarization, and division shows itself.

The Heavenly Way and the Human Way

"Is not the Way of Heaven like drawing a bow? What is high is pressed down, what is low is lifted up; what has surplus is diminished, what is insufficient is supplemented. The Way of Heaven diminishes what is in excess and supplements what is insufficient. The way of humans is otherwise — it diminishes the insufficient to serve the surplus. Who can take from their surplus to serve the world? Only one who holds the Way."
— Tao Te Ching, Chapter 77

Origin: Laozi's Tao Te Ching took shape around the late Spring and Autumn period, telling in five thousand words of the "Way" and its "power." Chapter 77 uses the "drawing a bow" as its image and sets out two contrary laws: the Heavenly Way — diminish the surplus to supplement the insufficient (like drawing a bow: press the high down, lift the low up, keep the balance); the human way — diminish the insufficient to serve the surplus (the rich grow richer, the poor poorer).

Laozi's answer: "Who can take from their surplus to serve the world? Only one who holds the Way" — only one who holds the Way is willing to give of their surplus to nourish the world. Rendered in our day, this is redistribution, yielding profit, and lifting the weak — returning the system to the Heavenly Way's self-regulation.

02

How Imbalance Forms

E

Those with Surplus Grow Ever More Surplus

Source of Division

Formation: capital, traffic and opportunity naturally concentrate toward the strong — the Matthew effect snowballs E: the winner takes all, the stronger grows stronger; surplus without diminishment ends in monopoly.

S

The Insufficient Are "Diminished"

The Sacrificed Term

Formation: the weak are steadily "diminished" of opportunity, dignity and the ladder of ascent — education, health care and opportunity lean toward the surplus (S harmed); involution and lying flat are the two responses of the "insufficient" to imbalance.

T

The Heavenly Way's Correction Is Blocked

The Hidden Cost

Formation: when redistribution fails and the mechanisms of fairness are absent, the system's self-correction (T) is blocked — imbalance accumulates until it is "forcibly corrected" through crisis and turmoil, at a cost far higher than voluntary yielding.

03

Four Levels Applied

INDIVIDUAL
Contentment and Diminution

A Life of Only Taking Is the Human Way in Miniature

Taking without giving back, the body and relationships are "diminished" — surplus money cannot replenish a depleted life.

FORMATION · THE HUMAN WAY

Chasing only the surplus of f(m) while diminishing the insufficiency of f(h) and f(t) — late nights draining health, taking draining relationships; this is "diminishing the insufficient to serve the surplus," and the ledger of life drifts ever further off.

REMEDY · THE HEAVENLY WAY

The individual's "serving the world from surplus": spare time given to family, spare resources to others, spare wealth to the future (supplementing T) — diminish one's own surplus to supplement one's own insufficiency, and life returns to balance.

FAMILY
Diminution and Mutual Aid

Only Counting "Who Gave More," a Home Becomes an Accounting Office

Weighing gains and losses, contending for credit — the human way within a family "diminishes" affection itself.

FORMATION · THE HUMAN WAY

Once a family runs by "diminishing the insufficient to serve the surplus" — the strong claim the credit, the weak are diminished, and those who gave more grow cold (S harmed); affection becomes a countable account, and the more it is reckoned, the thinner it grows.

REMEDY · THE HEAVENLY WAY

The way of the home lies in mutual aid: those with surplus bear more, the insufficient are lifted (supplementing T) — distribute by need rather than by merit, and affection becomes a possession that is never "diminished."

ENTERPRISE
Yielding and Shared Prosperity

A Firm That Answers Only to Its Shareholders Will Not Go Far

All profit to capital, employees and customers "diminished" — surplus without diminishment ends in losing the Way.

FORMATION · THE HUMAN WAY

An enterprise concentrates all profit (E) toward capital, and employee treatment, customer interests and social trust (S) are "diminished" — short-term surplus of E cannot buy long-term S and T, and in the end the market will "diminish its surplus."

REMEDY · THE HEAVENLY WAY

The enterprise's "serving the world from surplus": yielding profit to employees and customers, giving back to community and ecology (supplementing T) — yielding is not charity; it is putting S and T back into the multiplication, so that the business endures.

NATION
Diminution and the Art of Governance

Extreme Disparity Is the Prelude to a Dynasty's Collapse

"Wine and meat rot behind vermilion gates, while frozen bones lie by the road" — where the human way is unbalanced, the Heavenly Way comes to settle accounts.

FORMATION · THE HUMAN WAY

In the late period of successive dynasties, land and wealth concentrated in a few hands, the people (the insufficient) were steadily "diminished" while state extraction (the surplus) grew ever stronger — the Matthew effect pushed to its extreme, society torn apart, and dynasties changed in "forcible correction": exactly Laozi's prophecy.

REMEDY · THE HEAVENLY WAY

The art of governance lies in "diminishing the surplus to supplement the insufficient": tax adjustment, public services, equal opportunity (T's redistribution) — let the surplus give back to society, let the insufficient keep hope, and the system can keep self-regulating and endure in peace.

04

Mirrors in Today's World

Distribution

A rising Gini coefficient, widening urban-rural gaps — the human way's Matthew effect shows itself in reality.

Opportunity

Education and health care concentrate in the great cities — the surplus grow ever more surplus, the insufficient struggle to rise.

Mutual Aid

Crowdfunding, community mutual aid, charitable giving — ordinary people's "serving the world from surplus."

Cycle

Crisis is often "the Heavenly Way arriving late" — voluntary diminution beats forced liquidation.

What the Books Confirm

Tao Te Ching
Laozi · late Spring and Autumn period

Five thousand words, one thread throughout: "The Way of Heaven benefits and does not harm; the Way of the sage acts without contending" — benefiting others is benefiting oneself, yielding is keeping balance: the earliest "theory of systemic regulation."

Discourses on Laozi
Nan Huai-chin · 1987

Retelling Laozi in the language of daily life: "diminish surplus, supplement insufficiency" is not egalitarianism but dynamic balance — knowing how to yield and how to be content is true wisdom.

A Modern Commentary and Translation of the Laozi
Chen Guying · 1984

An authoritative edition restoring Laozi's original meaning: "serving the world from surplus" points to fairness and public justice — individuals yielding, society regulating: the bridge by which the human way returns to the Heavenly Way.

The Remedy: A New Connotation of Money

"The old ledger recorded only the accumulation of 'surplus'; the new ledger of money must give the 'insufficient' a chance to be supplemented."
— The Law of Value Conservation · The Way Out

Escaping the Matthew effect is not robbing the rich to feed the poor, but letting the Heavenly Way run again: economic value shifts from "monopolistic accumulation" to "yielding with measure" (multiplication of E); social value shifts from "diminished" to "supplemented" — education, health care and opportunity lean toward the insufficient (multiplication of S); time value shifts from "over-drawn" to "measured" — redistribution and intergenerational fairness enter the ledger (multiplication of T).

The new connotation of money — let currency carry three values at once:

· Economic value E: every yuan corresponds to real goods and services created, ending "printing without producing";
· Social value S: currency circulates on trust — rewarding yielding, mutual aid and lifting the weak: diminishing surplus to supplement insufficiency;
· Time value T: money is a promise across generations — education, innovation, green growth and continuity are measured, so that we never "eat our children's rice."

When money measures E, S and T at once, the yielding of the surplus is seen, the creation of the insufficient finds opportunity, and the unbalanced Heavenly Way corrects itself — the division formula loses its ground, the multiplication formula begins to self-regulate, and the virtuous cycle is triggered.

Twin-Blossom Insights

THE WEALTH INSIGHT

"When gold and jade fill the hall, none can keep them" — wealth in surplus that never diminishes will not long be held; yielding and reinvesting is the way wealth is conserved.

THE WELLBEING INSIGHT

"The highest good is like water, which benefits all things and does not contend" — those who serve the world from their surplus win the hearts of all; benefiting others is the double gain of feeling and fortune.

THE TWIN-BLOSSOM WAY

The individual's f(m)×f(h)×f(t) and the nation's E×S×T are one and the same thing: diminish the surplus to supplement the insufficient, return the three values to balance, and growth is real — the Heavenly Way is never far from people; yielding is conservation.

The Way of Heaven diminishes the surplus to supplement the insufficient; one who holds the Way serves the world from surplus.
With measure, with trust, with continuity — the three values returned to balance is the formula of the Heavenly Way;
creation, trust, continuity — three values measured together, is the underlying code of the three-way win for nation, enterprise and individual.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What does "diminish the surplus to supplement the insufficiency" mean?

A: The Heavenly Way is like drawing a bow — press the high down, lift the low up, and give of the surplus to the insufficient, keeping balance. Laozi holds that nature works this way of itself, while human society often runs contrary: the rich grow richer, the poor poorer (the Matthew effect) — which is why "one who holds the Way serves the world from surplus" is needed to correct it.

Q: Does Laozi's "human way" criticize human nature?

A: It is not a denial of human nature, but a naming of the tendency toward imbalance: resources naturally concentrate toward the strong, and without active regulation, polarization follows. Laozi's answer is active "diminution and supplementation" — yielding, redistribution, lifting the weak — so that the system returns to the Heavenly Way's self-regulation.

Q: What does the "new connotation of money" mean for ordinary people?

A: It lets money measure economic, social and time value at once. At the personal level this is the micro formula — do not let the chase for income drain your health, your relationships, or your long-term accumulation; keep f(h) and f(t), and your life earns compound interest.
